NORTHSTARS BASKETBALL

Boosting Abilities via Basketball Empowerment

Northstars basketball team play is for players of all skill levels.

Each player receives more instruction and development year-round tailored to their current skill level. Currently there are no tryouts for Northstars teams. The program has been around for more than 20 years.

Coaches have developed players from start up to playing in college. Parents can schedule a walk-in, preview session, at any time.

Session costs are determined by the number of practices and games held during that session.

Heywood Hunt

Founder & Coach

Heywood Hunt’s career spans over 5 decades. Heywood played football, basketball, and ran track at Ritenour High School. After graduation, he attended Northwest Missouri State University, where he graduated with a BS degree in Industrial Technology. He made the basketball team as a walk on which increased his understanding of being behind and how to catch up. A further note of his perseverance is he graduated from high school and college 2 years early.

Heywood started his coaching journey by helping athletes in high school. He was an assistant coach at Francis Howell Central and Melville High School. While in the Francis Howell School District, he was a Paraprofessional working with special needs students. He started reading books and watching videos to develop his knowledge and increase his basketball IQ. Working camps provided hands-on experience. Two notable camps were the Morgan Wooten camp in Maryland and Pete Newell’s Big Man Camp. These camps provided one on one opportunities and experiencing on court college and professional players and coaches.

Heywood’s love for the game is undeniable, and with the help of his wife Sue, they formed a nonprofit organization called All American Athlete in 1994. The mission was to help players and give them a chance to flourish in life and sports. Heywood’s extensive basketball background form the strategies, concepts, and systems which are the building blocks for All American Athlete. The addition of Northstars basketball with Danny Blackshear and Bill Hafer combined to provide 3 entities. All American Athlete became the business entity, Northstars basketball the team entity, and Hoop2ters as the training entity. Most recently the dream has been further increased with the building of the Lombardo Homes and All American Athlete Children Center. Special thanks go to Mike Van Pamel, family, and staff at Lombardo Homes to build Heywood’s dream house for the program. This state-of-the-art facility has helped to develop more student/athletes increased the organizations reach in the community spreading our mission, tradition, direction, and history.

“We all need help at some time in our lives and All American Athlete tries to help when help is needed. We are not here to develop athletes in skill only. We develop the total person and prepare them for life. Life is a more intense game.”

Jason

Coach

I am a recent addition to the coaching staff and although I have minimal experience coaching, I am not new to basketball. I have experience hosting various double elimination tournaments through my church for a number of years. I enjoy working with the youth and even going through the practices with them to show them they can get through anything they put their mind to. I am a parent to 2 daughters that have been in the program, and I continue to play basketball myself.

Daryen

Coach

My experience as being a coach has been great working with the team. Bringing back old memories being their age playing basketball every Sunday with my uncles and cousins and friends were great times, but more importantly, the kids have shown me again the positive influence I can give the team. It’s about their impact in the game and, more importantly, the impact in their lives.

Torrie

Coach

Thank you to All American Athlete for welcoming me and my boys to the Northstars family. My experience here has been great! I’ve enjoyed coaching all the games and getting to meet all new kids and their parents. Most importantly I’m teaching something that I love to do ever since I was able to dribble a ball. Basketball has always been a passion of mine and it will continue whether I am coaching or I’m playing. I’ve been playing basketball since I was 7 years old, I’ve been on at least 4 to 5 good solid teams throughout my experience, that includes college ball. Both coaching and playing has been quite the experience as it has most definitely kept my attention. Basketball was always good for me, and I hope I can instill it into my boys the way it was instilled into me at a young age!

Delano

Coach

My name is “Coach D or Coach Delano”. A little background about me, I grew up in north St. Louis county. I’m a married father of four with three sons and one daughter. Some of our favorite things to do is go on nature hikes and family road trips. As for me, I’m a huge movie buff. In my family I’m considered the “D-Lister” movie critic. Other than movies, my passion is youth development in sports.

I was a late bloomer to basketball, but once I learned the fundamentals I realized they are parallel to the values instilled in everyday life. Though late, I had a natural aptitude for the sport. I played some in high school, AAU, and some college. When I was volun-told by my wife to coach my eldest sons fifth grade YMCA team, it sparked a joy and love for educating youth. I was able to teach what was taught to me and had great success. The parents of those kids thought I inspired them on and off the court to be a better person, but my players were the ones who inspired me to take coaching more serious. Basketball taught me how to hold my composure in stressful situations/environments, how to persevere through adversity, discipline, persistence, patience, respect, humility and etc.

What to expect from me as a coach is, I have an “old school” approach with a “new school” twist. I have zero tolerance for disrespect and lack of effort. I am big on accountability, communication and effort on and off the court. I will bring the best out of each child that will show on and off the court, and instill all the values and fundamentals taught to me. I look forward to watching the growth and development of each child throughout the years with North Star.
